$500 Million Charleston Harbor Deepening Clears Hurdle

Posted on October 4, 2016

The half-billion dollar Charleston Harbor deepening project has cleared another hurdle now that the House of Representatives has passed the Water Resources Development Act.

The measure approved Wednesday includes $200 million in federal money for the channel deepening project. Differences between the House and the Senate version approved earlier must now be worked out.

South Carolina Ports Authority president and CEO Jim Newsome is applauding the state’s congressional delegation for working to get the federal bill passed.

The authority wants the shipping channel deepened to 52 feet from 45 feet to accommodate larger containerships.

South Carolina lawmakers have already set aside $300 million to pay for the state’s share of the deepening.
