BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA — The Canaveral Port Authority and Brevard County have partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the sixth iteration of a federally-mandated initiative to preserve Space Coast beaches and ensure continued safe navigation of Canaveral Harbor.

This critical shoreline preservation project represents a historic investment of $41 million, which is 100% federally funded.

This represents the sixth iteration of an ongoing federal initiative designed to mitigate downdrift erosion caused by the Canaveral Harbor Federal navigation project.

“This important project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has restored miles of beaches over the past several decades while ensuring the continued safe navigation of our harbor,” said Capt. John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO.

“The Space Coast is world famous for its beaches, including our own Jetty Park, and Port Canaveral is proud to support the continued efforts of this important and ongoing federal initiative.” Murray continued.

The USACE Sand Bypass Beach Renourishment Project requires the removal of sand buildup from the north side of the entrance to Port Canaveral to be funneled through submerged and floating pipelines to beach placement areas located south of the Port.

Port Canaveral and Brevard County are the local sponsors for the federal project, which involves the dredging and bypassing approximately 1.5 million cubic yards of sand. The entire project will be completed before sea turtle nesting season starts.

Beach equipment is being mobilized at Washington Avenue in the City of Cape Canaveral in anticipation of sand placement starting in the northern segment between January 20-28.
