Grand Popo, Benin: The Ministry of the Living Environment and Sustainable Development recently awarded a contract, funded by the World Bank, to West African dredging contractor Logistics and Assistance S.A. to remove over 100,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Mono River in Grand Popo, Benin.
The World Bank approved $210 million in financing to fund a regional project known as the West Africa Coastal Areas (WACA) Resilience Investment Program. The program is designed to protect against coastal erosion through a range of activities, including restoring wetlands, replenishing beaches, and building seawalls.
Grand Popo, known as a popular fishing community, is susceptible to flooding due to an underdeveloped coastline and climate change. The program’s funding covers the costs of restoring the river for those residents whose lives depend on the Mono River as a source of food, livelihood, and nutrition.
Logistics and Assistance S.A. used an Ellicott 370 Dragon® Dredge to complete the project by rerouting the Mono River away from a nearby road that has eroded over time in order to prevent future floods from occurring.
