304-km of channels to be cleared in Thanjavur district

The Public Works Department (PWD) is undertaking extensive dredging and cleaning operation to clear the silt and debris clogging irrigations channels in Tiruvarur district. A total of 304 km waterways will be cleared of silt at a cost of Rs. 2.86 crore to ensure water reached tail end aycut and all the works are expected to be completed in a fortnight.

Detailing the scope of dredging operations at a site in Ogaiperaiyoor village, District Collector M. Mathivanan said that 93 jobs were awarded for dredging operations covering 304 km of waterways covering major irrigation and drainage channels during the current year following demands from farmers and aycutdars. Of the 93 works, 49 have been completed and works on the remaining were proceeding smoothly.
