PANAMA CITY, Fla. – The Bay County Tourist Development Council announced at their meeting Tuesday that the Mexico Beach renourishment project that will renourish three miles of beach has begun.

The $27 million project has been funded through the American Rescue Plan Act.

“This is a great project because as you know, Mexico Beach was completely inundated by Hurricane Michael, where they experienced 19 and a half feet of storm surge, and this will really help Mexico Beach out tremendously, it’s wonderful because no local dollars are going in to fund this project, so we couldn’t be more excited for our friends at Mexico Beach with this great project,” said Dan Rowe, Executive Director for the Bay County Tourist and Development Council.

Crews have already started mobilizing the equipment. They will begin pumping sand at the end of this month. The project is expected to take three months to complete.
