22-010 Corps of Engineers seeks public input for Environmental Assessment for Lower Snake River Navigation Channel Maintenance Project

Posted on February 15, 2022

WALLA WALLA, WA – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District (Corps) is seeking public comments regarding the Lower Snake River Navigation Channel Maintenance Project.

The Corps is proposing to dredge near the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers to reestablish the congressionally authorized dimensions of the federal navigation channel to support safe and efficient commercial navigation, and operation of

Lower Granite Reservoir at minimum operating pool during juvenile salmon migration.

The Corps is requesting comments in accordance with National Environmental Policy Act regulations to identify important issues to be analyzed in depth in an Environmental Assessment (EA) and draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) unless an Environmental Impact Statement is determined appropriate. Helpful comments will focus on 1) significant issues associated with the proposed dredging-disposal action; 2) options for disposal of dredged material (e.g., in-water or upland); 3) potential environmental effects.

The Corps intends to release an EA and draft FONSI for public review and comment by July 2022. If no significant environmental effects are identified through analysis in the EA, or during the public review period, the Corps would issue a final FONSI by September 2022.

The Corps will collect comments and input from February 8, 2022, to March 7, 2022, at: http://www.nww.usace.army.mil/Missions/Environmental-Compliance. The Corps will also accept written comments via email to NEPANWW@usace.army.mil or mailed to:
