CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The Port of Charleston will be getting some improvements thank to millions of dollars in federal funding.
Senator Lindsey Graham announced Tuesday that the South Carolina Ports Authority will receive a nearly $20 million grant.
The money comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the Wando Welch Terminal.
According to a press release from Senator Graham, the funding will let the South Carolina Ports Authority build an underwater retaining wall and deepen three berths for larger ships.
“We understand SCPA is a top economic engine for South Carolina, helping provide over 187,000 jobs and generating $53 billion in economic activity. Improvements like this at the Port of Charleston are critical to regional economic prosperity and help ensure the United States remains competitive in a growing world economy,” Sen. Graham stated after thanking those involved in approving the funding.
“Our ports are an integral component of our Nation’s economic success,” added Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao. “As the Administration continues to invest in America’s infrastructure, this program will further modernize and improve the efficiency of our waterways.”
In September of 2019, South Carolina lawmakers on both sides of the aisle wrote to Secretary Chao in support of the funding request.
