$15M Langan Park dredging contract for Hughes Co’s to be considered by Mobile City Council

$15M Langan Park dredging contract to be considered by Mobile City Council

Posted on May 19, 2025

After nearly two years of design and discussions, Tuesday the Mobile City Council will consider awarding a $15.2 million contract for the dredging of Langan Lake at Municipal Park, including stormwater improvements.

The contract with Hughes Companies calls for the project to be completed in one-year and would remove a minimum of 125,000 cubic yards of ‘muck’ from the lake.

The vast majority of ‘muck’, 105,000 cubic yards would be dewatered on-site, and removed for off-site disposal, with 20,000 cubic yards retained for what the contract calls ‘beneficial use’.

According to bid documents, the lake has never been dredged.

The good news: the lake will be deepened allowing boats to come on the lake.

“When this dredging is complete, we’ll be able to put canoes and kayaks back out onto the lake. We have plans to build a boathouse that we’re looking to do the design now,” said District 7 Councilwoman Gina Gregory in a June 2022 interview about the project.

The bad news: some of the spoils from the bottom of the lake will be used to build up low lying areas in the park. That sand and sediment which is dug up will have a bad smell to it while it dries.

The contract also calls for Apple Snails and their eggs, an invasive species which have become prolific in the lake, to be buried 3 feet deep, an effort to control and eliminate the species.
