A $1.6 million “substantial construction project” near the Port of Orillia is now entering its final phase, as reported by City officials.
“This project, initiated in December 2024, aims to address weed growth and sediment buildup, restoring historic lake depths to accommodate larger vessels and enhance the port’s functionality,” stated the City of Orillia on its website.
The final step of the dredging project involves enhancements to the Port of Orillia, focusing on the area from the Waterfront Centre to the breakwaters. This includes the removal of vegetative growth and sediment to restore historic lake levels.
In the meantime, excavators and barges will be stationed at the port for dredging operations. Staff says the boat launch will be closed at the Orillia Waterfront Centre; a portion of the parking lot and the area on the south side of the building will be closed too.
The City also stated that the paved trail running through this area will remain open along with the fishing pier.
While the project is underway, active dredging is set to keep the water moving and break ice during the process, preventing thick ice from forming.
The anticipated completion date according to the City is November.
“To ensure public safety during ongoing dredging operations, we strongly advise all individuals to stay out of the designated dredging area and away from nearby ice,” stated officials.
