Malaysia’s Star newpaper says that “maritime rage” akin to “road rage” is being eyed as the possible cause of an incident captured on YouTube videos that show the moment when a 3,745 dwt hopper dredge slammed into the side of a 47,106 dwt moored tanker.

The incident took place at about 11.40 a.m. local time at Melaka Anchorage, Malaysia, in the Malacca Strait.

According to the Equasis data base, the dredge, the Sierra Leone flagged Oceanline 5001, is owned by Huang Fan Sdn Bhd of Malaysia. The tanker, the Bahamas flagged Strovolos, is managed by World Tankers Management Pte of Singapore.

The Star report quotes Malacca State Executive Council member Norhizam bin Hassan Baktee as saying local fishermen as saying that the incident could have been similar ti a road rage incident and that “”we need to find out whether the incident was triggered due to lack of space for anchoring vessels at the congested Tanjung Bruas Port.” He also added that four divers had been carrying out repair works on the hull of the tanker when the incident occurred.

The newspaper says the dredge was headed for a sand extraction area when it slammed into the tanker.
