A project to repair the access stairs at Pennington Bay will receive funding from the regional coastal protection grant program.

The Kangaroo Island Council will receive a $155,000 grant towards its $195,000 project.

Erosion in recent years has seen the base of the stairs needing attention.

It was one of 13 projects across South Australia to improve coastal protection that will receive $1.2 million as part of the latest round of the Regional Coastal Protection Grants.

The projects range from foreshore rock armouring at Moonta Bay as well as a foreshore revetment wall at Smoky Bay, to concept plans and consultation for a seapool at Hallett Cove.

The state governments says the grants will enable 13 projects worth $2.3 million worth to be delivered to address erosion or flooding hazards and public safety and access along the coast, including foreshore protection, dune rehabilitation, and coastal maintenance.

“South Australia’s coastline is the first defence against a changing climate and beaches are often at the heart of our regional communities’ economies,” environment minister David Speirs said.
