Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority has started dredging sediment and debris from the bottom of a Turag channel, which was freed from illegal occupation two weeks back at Basila in Dhaka.

Private land developer company Amin and Momin Development Limited forcibly occupied the land years ago and were doing illegal businesses.

BIWTA joint director AKM Arif Uddin said they would spend Tk 6 crore from BIWTA’s own income to make the 2,800-feet-long and 250-feet-wide channel navigable.

‘We will make it a 30-feet-deep channel within one and a half months,’ he added.

On March 5, BIWTA eviction team demolished illegal structure of the land development company and also fined an employee Tk 20,000 of the company for hampering the eviction drive.

Besides, dredging the channel, BIWTA continued its eviction of illegal structures on both sides of the Turag from Amin Bazar to Mirpur, Arif said.

On Tuesday, BIWTA demolished 317 illegal structures, including, two two-storey buildings and 15 one-storey buildings.

Over 2,000 structures build on illegally occupied land were demolished on the banks of the Buriganga and the Turag during the eviction drive, Arif claimed.

He said that the drive would start this morning from Zahurabadh, Mirpur.
