BARNSTABLE — A new $1.2 million Barnstable County dredge scheduled for delivery this week is delayed due to a mishap at the Ellicott Dredges manufacturing facility in Baltimore.
As it was being hoisted late last week, the new dredge fell approximately 2 to 3 feet and hit a support stanchion, causing damage to the hull, according to Assistant Barnstable County Administrator Stephen Tebo.
“The good news is that it didn’t hurt any of the hydraulic or electronic systems,” Tebo said. “But four sections of the dredge will have to be replaced.”
Tebo anticipates the dredge repairs will be completed within two weeks. After delivery to a Fairhaven shipyard, the dredge should be in Cape waters by the end of the month and available for a project in Truro that begins Nov. 11.
“With two dredges operational, the delay of the new dredge shouldn’t affect our project schedule,” Tebo said.
